History of the UMRBC Conference

For at least five years, Roger Lorance of Illinois and Clifton Ralph of Indiana talked about having a large regional meeting in the upper Midwest. It was their thought that a regional meeting could provide experience for area blacksmiths that they might not get in their local groups. And, as Clifton put it, it was very important the conference "extend friendships and camaraderie between fellow blacksmiths." And indeed, it does!

From this concept and the efforts of many, the Upper Midwest Regional Blacksmithing Conference began. The First UMRBC was held in October of 1997. Paul Moffett, of IBA, chaired this very successful first event. John Biewer, of UMBA, continues that tradition. Each conference has grown in scope & vision to serve the blacksmithing community, and we anticipate the 2007 Conference will be the best ever. Blacksmiths from all over the Midwest come together to learn & share, to buy and sell…they return home with at least a few new treasures and a whole lot of knowledge, ready to put it to work.

The UMRBC has something for everyone. Our featured smiths will demonstrate for every skill level, and beginning blacksmiths can take advantage of the all day Beginner’s Class on Friday, July 18th. Friday also includes affiliate member demonstrations from Treadle Hammer to Hydraulic Press. Our Saturday night Auction is a highlight of the weekend. The Gallery will showcase talent from beginner to professional. And the Tailgating! A blacksmiths "candy store!" But if you like "new," several vendors will be present, too. Family Classes are being planned to provide fun opportunities for spouses & children. The quaint city of Pontiac is close and offers delightful shopping including crafts & antiques. Pontiac is home to three swinging bridges and features a city tour by Trolley.

Members of IBA, IVBA, & UMBA generously give of their time & talents to produce one of the most respected events in the Midwest. Many serve throughout the conference and we’d like to say special thanks to Bob Bergman, Roger Carlsen, Mark & Mindy Gardner, Jim Handzel, Gary Jameson, Bill Kauffman, Roger & Janet Lorance, Paul Moffett, Don Nuenschwander, Jim Ribordy, Jeff Sallot, Augie Schmidt, Paul Sperbeck, Mark Thomas, Bob Tuftee & Tony Vanagas for their assistance. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. Put it on your calendar as the "not to be missed" event in 2007!
